In regions like Buea and Foumban, centuries of indigenous Cameroonian history, folklore, and native languages are at risk of being permanently lost as older generations pass away without formal records. The "Preserving Indigenous Oral Arts & Languages" campaign by CRUDEF directly funds audio-visual recording projects, community storytelling archives, and youth cultural workshops. By investing $35,000.00 into these living cultural programs, we document vulnerable languages, support local storytellers, and ensure Cameroon’s rich artistic heritage is passed down to future generations.
In the historical city of Foumban and the traditional villages surrounding Buea, cultural identity has been carried for generations not in textbooks, but through the voices of local elders, griots, and traditional artisans. Pa Ndifor, an 82-year-old master storyteller in the West Region, holds decades of proverbs, historical legends, and native language nuance in his memory. Yet, as modern urbanization accelerates and younger generations migrate to larger cities, these rich oral traditions face an unprecedented threat of extinction. Without dedicated intervention, rare dialects and foundational community histories risk disappearing forever within a single generation.
This loss of intangible cultural heritage strips local youth of their identity and disconnects communities from their historical roots. Recognizing this urgency, CRUDEF established a targeted initiative to safeguard these irreplaceable artistic expressions across the South West and West Regions of Cameroon.
Through our Preserving Indigenous Oral Arts & Languages initiative, CRUDEF deploys local field teams equipped with digital recording gear to document, translate, and archive over 100 hours of oral histories, traditional songs, and native language lessons from elders in Buea and Foumban. Beyond digital archiving, the campaign establishes community youth workshops and local art exhibitions where elders train young people in traditional storytelling, craft-making, and performance arts. By bridging the generational divide, we protect Cameroon’s living heritage and foster cultural pride among rural youth.
