For over twenty years, Mama Beatrice has cultivated a small two-acre farm in the rural basin of Kumba, relying on traditional seasonal knowledge passed down by her parents to feed her family and sell cassava and maize at the local market. In recent years, however, erratic weather patterns across the South West Region have disrupted planting seasons. Prolonged dry spells followed by sudden, torrential downpours have degraded the soil, washed away topsoil nutrients, and destroyed entire harvests.

Like thousands of smallholders in rural Buea and Kumba, Mama Beatrice faced dwindling crop yields, leading to severe financial instability and household food insecurity. Lacking access to modern climate-smart techniques, irrigation tools, or resilient crop varieties, local farming families are left increasingly vulnerable to the immediate impacts of changing climate conditions.

To secure food systems and protect rural livelihoods, CRUDEF launched the Climate-Smart Agriculture for Smallholders program across high-priority farming settlements in rural Buea and the Kumba Basin.

Through this initiative, CRUDEF provides 5,000 smallholder farmers with high-yield, drought-resistant seed packages, organic composting materials, and simple rainwater harvesting equipment. Additionally, we conduct hands-on field workshops teaching soil conservation, crop diversification, and sustainable pest management. By transitioning vulnerable smallholders to climate-resilient practices, we restore land productivity, safeguard local food supplies, and create lasting economic stability for farming families across Cameroon.
